The current state of journalism is a perfect storm for viewers, with opinionated reporting that leaves people with few options not tainted by opinion and extreme viewpoints. This trend is evident in cable news outlets. Rather than reporting facts and sticking to truth-driven journalism, they have instead sought to prey upon political biases giving audiences nothing but agenda-driven "news" with an opinionated tone. Even legacy outlets, once purveyors of truth-driven journalism, have shifted away from this model. All because sensationalism sells, and ratings drive advertisers.   Polarizing media leaves people with few information sources that encourage critical thinking. As a result, people limit themselves to information supporting their ideologies while ignoring those challenging them. In addition, our polarized two-party political system contributes to creating one of the most significant issues impacting our country today. Our news initiatives aim to provide the most objective facts while providing different perspectives leaving the reader to make their own judgments.

Solution to Media Bias

Today, people gravitate more toward their ideological echo chambers while excluding, censoring, and attacking those with different viewpoints. We believe the world is made better through civilized discourse and inclusion rather than exclusion. In this spirit, we are designing our products to allow and encourage open discussion and debate on any topic, even those deemed controversial. Everyone can join the conversation knowing they won't be censored or silenced simply for asking a question or expressing a point of view. We want to unite people of all backgrounds by encouraging meaningful discourse, inviting new perspectives, and providing learning opportunities for all.

Small businesses have been and continue to be squeezed out of the market by larger companies with more resources and power. On top of this, marketing and advertising have become increasingly more complex, expensive, confusing, and time-consuming. Small businesses need to be creative, not only to compete but also to stand out. We aim to develop solutions that help small businesses to do both more effectively, so money doesn't flow away from the community but stays within it.

Building a Brand

Name, Logo, & Branding
The name Vocella combines the Latin adjective "voce," meaning "vocal or loud voice," and "cella," meaning "the hidden inner room in a temple." The literal translation would be "loud room." The name represents the business as a space for people to connect, collaborate, create, learn, and express themselves.

The logo is a timeless, fun, and exciting freehand script with a playful, free-spirited, and jazzy vibe. It is clean, crisp, easily identifiable, and usable in digital and print media. It represents a creative, grassroots, progressive company serving as a platform for self-expression, creativity, and collaboration.

The solo "V" in a circular brushstroke of color is reminiscent of the zen brushwork known as enso. It represents a moment when the mind is free to let the body create. The "V" is reminiscent of a check mark, leaving a subtle impression that one has made the proper selection. It will serve as the company's symbol used primarily to identify Vocella products, uniting them under one brand.

Is print media dead?

It's been said that print is dead since many consumers have turned to mobile devices to consume media. However, accounting for all demographics, an average of 58% prefer print, whereas only 28%* describe themselves as choosing digital. Given these statistics, it's become increasingly clear that more people are still interested in print. An effective marketing strategy requires an effective mix of both digital and print.** 

 

Although print is still alive and well, it must evolve to stay relevant. Today's consumers have shorter attention spans, and most don't have the time or patience to read lengthy content. We design our content to be engaging and concise, and our digital and print products work cohesively to inform and entertain local communities. We give businesses a highly effective platform to market themselves effectively. 

We're building the heart and soul of everything Vocella represents. It's a labor of love. Our flagship website, Vocella.com, will serve as a community lifestyle magazine, allowing users to post community news, opinion pieces, creative fiction, poetry, and more. It is ever-changing and evolving, and we constantly strive to fulfill our mission and achieve our vision. The website will connect users to our products and services, allowing them to see their artistic, literary, and intellectual work featured in our print and digital products. It will also serve as a forum for networking, collaboration, discussion, and debate.

The Vocella Graphic launched on November 2, 2023.  A dynamic, regional newspaper, the Graphic provides a comprehensive view of our community and the surrounding region. With a modern, clean design the Graphic covers news for Northeast Montana and Northwest North Dakota. Featuring news & events, ag & oil updates, area culture, lifestyle, and local profiles the Vocella Graphic is quickly becoming the go-to source for the region's news and interests.

The Shopper has been a free classified shopper publication serving the Bakken area of Western North Dakota and Eastern Montana since 1988. Acquired in May of 2022, it has since been renamed Community Shopper and redesigned to feature a community calendar, directory pages, games, puzzles, and more, in addition the classified ads. Papers are bulk mailed to rural routes all over Western North Dakota and Eastern Montana and delivered directly to business drop points in Stanley, Tioga, Ray, and Williston. The Community Shopper strives to be a community resource that intimately connects readers to the surrounding community and the businesses that serve them.

The Fortna Oracle was started in 2020 serving the smaller communities of the Bakken northeast of Williston. It quickly developed a cult following in the area with many readers looking forward to its content each week.

Vocella acquired the publication in January 2023 and rebranded to The Oracle. It continues to serve the northeast Bakken, providing news and community events for the area as well as an avenue for local businesses to reach their customers.

Future of the Company

We are redesigning the Community Shopper website, adding free online classifieds, community and business news articles, and a community events calendar. All of these updates will work cohesively with the Community Shopper publication. Our clients will find they can purchase print and digital advertising more quickly and conveniently online.
